Irregular cycles are often treated as something to manage, rather than something to truly understand.
A period might be late, cycles can feel inconsistent, or ovulation isn’t always clear. When this happens, the focus quickly shifts to, “How do we regulate it?” Whether that’s through tracking, supplements, or medication, the goal becomes getting things back on track as quickly as possible.
But there’s a more important question that often gets overlooked: why is this happening in the first place?
In many cases, irregular cycles are approached through basic hormone testing, symptom tracking, or medication to regulate the cycle. And while these approaches can absolutely have their place, they don’t always explain what’s actually driving the issue. They can sometimes focus on managing the symptom, rather than understanding the cause.
Because your cycle doesn’t become irregular for no reason. It’s not random or unpredictable without explanation. It’s a reflection of what’s happening within your body, often giving subtle clues that something is out of balance.
When someone comes to me in clinic with irregular cycles, I’m not just looking at the cycle itself. I’m looking at the full picture of what’s going on in the body. That includes how hormones are communicating with each other, not just their individual levels, as well as the state of the nervous system and the impact that stress may be having.
I also consider nutritional status and whether the body has enough consistent energy to support a healthy cycle, alongside blood flow and circulation, which play a key role in both menstruation and ovulation. Digestive function is another important piece of the puzzle, as it affects how well nutrients are absorbed and hormones are processed.
Your cycle isn’t an isolated system. It’s deeply connected to everything else that’s happening in your body, which is why simply trying to “fix” the cycle in isolation doesn’t always lead to lasting change.
This approach becomes even more important when it comes to fertility.
You might be told that everything looks “normal,” that ovulation is happening, and that there’s no clear diagnosis. On paper, everything seems fine, yet you may still feel stuck, frustrated, or unsure of what to do next.
That’s often because fertility isn’t just about whether something is technically “wrong.” It’s about whether your body is supported, nourished, and regulated enough to conceive and sustain a pregnancy. And that requires more than a surface-level assessment or a tick-box approach.
A meaningful consultation goes beyond simply listing symptoms. It involves asking what has already been explored, what hasn’t yet been looked at, and what patterns are showing up over time. It’s about joining the dots and identifying what might be getting missed.
When the right questions are asked, things often start to make more sense, and the next steps feel much clearer and more personalised.
Regulating a cycle or supporting fertility isn’t about doing more or trying everything at once. It’s about understanding more. Understanding what your body needs, what it might be lacking, and what could be getting in the way of it functioning optimally.
If your cycle feels unpredictable, or your fertility journey feels unclear, there is usually a reason behind it. And it’s worth taking the time to explore that properly, rather than continuing to guess or manage symptoms on the surface.
